I would like to share with you the following:
For Engineering and Science, most common degrees are:
- MSc stands for Master of Science, if your background is engineering or science (Physics, Math, computer, etc.) you are eligible for MSc degree. In UK usually one year full time, taught courses and thesis, in North America (NA) well known as MESc (Master of Engineering Science), it is two years program, taught courses and Thesis.
- M.Phil is Master of Philosophy, I think it is research degree, no courses and sometimes you admitted for M.Phil. as probation period for PhD.
- MEng, Master of Engineering is more related to industrial and practicality, research is not required especially in UK, but in NA you could do thesis with less courses. MEng will not equalify you for PhD, you may attend additional courses or research (thesis)
My recommendation if you are thinking to pursue your master degree in engineering, choose MSc you would have either choices to work for industrial after completion or pursuing PhD degree.
As for M.Phil is more involvement in researching, it wouldn’t be useful without pursuing PhD degree. I prefer MESc (NA system), because it is longer research thesis based, as in UK research thesis is only three to four months. Please correct me if I am wrong and inshallah Bel Tawfiq for everyone.
